Siruva festival was celebrated on Baisakh 2 last year. Since early morning, the villagers were busy celebrating the festival by taking blessings from the dignitaries. There was joy in the village. The sweetmeats had already started cooking at home. Ramavatidevi Ram, who had reached Lahan at night to participate in Ashtayam, also returned home in a hurry to prepare for the festival. When she did not see her sleeping daughter at home, she panicked.
She started looking for the neighborhood. When she was nowhere to be found, she became suspicious thinking that something had happened to her daughter. The reason he became suspicious was the attempted rape of his 18-year-old daughter Pooja Kumari Ram three years ago.
Although the Saptari District Court sentenced Pooja to 8 months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 7,000 in the attempted rape case against Pooja three years ago, Pooja had stopped going to school for three years because of the fear that the culprit would be on the run again.
On 2 Baisakh, Ramvatidevi found Pooja's dead body when she reached a place called Tingachhiya, about one kilometer away from her house. She fell there as if she was unconscious . After the body of Pooja of Surunga Municipality-7 Haripur Ramtol of Saptari was found covered with a leaf, Ramvati Devi filed a complaint with the police the next day. Before that, the police who arrived at the scene started the investigation with the help of a trained dog brought from the provincial police office. After investigation, the police confirmed that Pooja was murdered. Although three months have passed since the murder, the police have not been able to find the culprit yet.
The body of 32-year-old Rajkumar Khang was found strangled in a pond in Rajgarh Rural Municipality-4 Pipra on June 12, before Pooja's murder was resolved. After the dead body of Khang of Dakneshwari Municipality-8 was found naked, the locals informed the police. The police reached the spot and confirmed the murder of Khang and started a thorough investigation. The police is investigating with the help of trained dogs from the Madhesh Police Office. Although the police have arrested a woman suspected to be involved in that incident, the reason for the incident has not been disclosed.
Last Tuesday night, there was an attempt to rape a woman from Khadak Municipality-8 Wisanpur of Saptari who went to the hospital for treatment. The 21-year-old girl was taken to the Advanced Hospital Kalyanpur in the same place after she started having abdominal pain due to urinary retention. After taking her to the hospital at around 11 o'clock, the victim said that the lab assistant Shyam Kumar Mandal took her to the X-ray room and tried to rape her. According to the victim woman, Mandal tried to rape her private parts by biting her lips in the same room saying that X-rays were to be done. The next day after the incident, on June 11th, after filing a complaint at the local police Kalyanpur, the lab assistant Mandal was arrested and the police are investigating after taking an extension.
Another 35-year-old woman of Surunga municipality-11 was raped by a relative last Friday, less than three days after the incident. The woman said that 50-year-old Chandeshwar Sada and 45-year-old Ramdev Sada of Balanpatti in Balan Bihul Municipality-1 of Saptari raped her. Chandeshwar and Ramdev are his maternal uncle's sons. Both of them who came home around 12 o'clock in the night and said that the mother was sick and taking her last breath, she left with them .
After reaching the Bihul River, the woman is accused of forcibly raping her. When the son called his mother's house inquiring about his mother who had left the house late at night, he found out that his maternal grandmother was ill, so he took the villager with him and went to look for him . When they reached the south Bihul river about one kilometer from the house, both the accused started running away and were arrested with the help of the villagers. Ward president Ramkumar Chaudhary said that they were assigned to the local police cadre.
Dalit activist Bhola Paswan said that incidents of murder and violence against Dalits have increased as the vision of the state apparatus is different. "What can we say about the police not being able to find the culprit even though it has been three months since Pooja's murder?" He said, "Is the police's investigation weak or is there a delay in protecting criminals with money and power?" Acting Paswan says that when the police is weak in one incident against Dalits, another incident happens.
District Police Spokesperson DSP Jitendra Kumar Basnet said that the CIB team is also investigating the two murders. "Investigation is also going on in the rape incident," he said, "We will finish the investigation in the murder incident soon."
