35-year-old Joganand Mandal of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality-1 Bhardah of Saptari was arrested while the area police office Bhardah was checking the road. He was arrested last Sunday and is accused of smuggling eight quintals of 10 kilos of ganja.
On 14th January 2079, on the basis of secret information about smuggling of ganja through the Koshi river, the police seized ganja from the eastern island of Koshi Bhangal, 500 meters north-east of the goal at the barrage. Although 27 sacks of marijuana were recovered under the sand on the island, the accused Mandal, who was going to smuggle them, had already escaped.
Mandal, who was arrested during the search, has been found guilty by the Saptari District Court in three other drug-related cases, and the police said that he is accused of dealing in weapons and killing. According to the statement released by the police on Saturday, in 2071/072, the Saptari District Court sentenced him to two years imprisonment and a fine of 15,000 in the drug case, while in 077/078, he was also sentenced to two years in prison and a fine of 15,000 and in 080/081, he was also sentenced to 10,000 fine and 400 compensation in the drug (brown sugar) case, said DSP Jitendra Kumar Basnet.
According to him, while being imprisoned for two years in 077/078, Mandal spent two months and 28 days in prison, so those days have been deducted and he has to serve one year, 9 months and 2 days in prison and pay a fine of 15,000. He is accused of some public crimes since 2065, murder industry and arms embezzlement cases. DSP Basnet said that Budhan was absconding when the case of public crime in 2065/066, industry and arms and tools for killing 068/069 and arms and ammunition in 078/079 was filed.
The investigation is also being conducted in that case, while the investigation in the case of smuggling eight quintals of 10 kilos of ganja has been extended and the investigation has been continued, according to the police.
