An inmate escaped from the district jail at Rajviraj in Saptari on Sunday night.
Despite high security and high walls all around, the prisoners escaped. 35-year-old Ramanand Mandal of Shambhunath Municipality-11, who is serving prison life in the Saptari District Jail for a preliminary hearing in a theft case, said that the jail chief, Matrikaprasad Dahal, escaped. He was in prison for pre-trial detention since January 6, 2081.
Jail chief Dahal said that the issue of how he escaped is still not clear. "They may have escaped on Sunday night when the wind was gusty and thundering, but despite the high walls and security, it is not known how they escaped," Dahal said. In the morning, when the number of inmates and prisoners was counted, the prison administration found out that the inmates had escaped.
Saptari SP Dhakendra Khatiwada said that the police had been mobilized to search for Mandal who had escaped from the jail. SP Khatiwada said that necessary investigations are also being conducted on the policemen who are on duty in the district jail.
