Birgunj market closed for half a day in protest against main road expansion, memorandum to Prime Minister

Homeowners and businessmen who protested against the 25-25 meter extension of the main road of Birganj metropolis closed the market for half a day on Thursday. They protested by closing the shop from morning till 12 noon.

Their demand is to get proper compensation before road expansion. In order to stop the expansion of the road, the struggle was started by forming the 'Birganj Youth and Traders Road Victims Struggle Committee'.

The coordinator of the committee, Jawahar Prasad Gupta, said that this committee is a committee under the previous Birgunj Bachau Sangharsh Committee. He said that the committee's phased struggle will continue. He said that it is wrong to start road expansion before the full text of the Supreme Court's decision.

Gupta, who is also the ward president of Birgunj-9, said that there is a danger of erasing the history of Birgunj and the existence of the city when the main road is extended by 25-25 meters.

He also said that the road expansion work done without proper compensation to the house owners and businessmen is not acceptable. He warned that if their demands are not addressed, they will be forced to stage a protest.

The Supreme Court dismissed the petition filed by the landlord against the expansion of Birganj's main road on February 28. After that, the road department has started preparations for widening the road in coordination with the metropolitan office. The department has started the process of road demarcation through the survey office in coordination with the metropolis.

Birgunj Bachau Sangharsh Samiti sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister through Chief District Officer Ganesh Aryal and demanded to stop the main road expansion. In the presence of Superintendent of Police Gautam Mishra and Superintendent of Armed Police Radheshyam Dhimal, the coordinator of the committee, Jawahar Prasad Gupta, submitted the memorandum to Prazia Aryal. In the memorandum, it has been warned that the struggle will continue if the demands of the committee are not met immediately.
