Kamala-Kanchanpur Charlane Highway: Speed of work increased, shortage of materials

The work on the under construction four-lane highway from Kamala in Siraha to Kanchanpur in Saptari has gained momentum. After the government extended the deadline for another year, the construction company increased the speed of work in the western section from 2nd of Chait.

For the construction of this highway, China Railway No. 2 Engineering Group got the contract for 15.66 billion rupees on 13 October 2077. The highway construction work is going on by dividing it into two sections, west and east. According to which, in the western section, from Kamala in Siraha to Kusaha in Saptari, it is 47.40 km, while in the eastern section, it is 39.42 km from Kusaha to Kanchanpur. According to the agreement with the government, this highway with a total of 86.82 km should have been constructed by November 11, 2080.

After the work was not completed on the specified date, the government extended the deadline until January 10, 2081 for the first time. However, due to the slow pace of the contractor's company, only 55.76 percent work has been completed in the western section and 51.74 percent in the eastern section.

After the construction company promised to hire more skilled manpower, the government has extended the deadline for the second time till 16th January 2082. Kanchanpur Kamala Road Plan, West Section, Mirchaiya, said that the construction company has started work in the west section in a new way after the extension of the deadline. "The work never stopped, but the speed of the work slowed down for various reasons," said Ujjwal Shrestha, head of Kanchanpur Kamala Road Project, West Section to Kantipur, "Now the contractor has started work in a new way with a new team." Similarly, out of 25 pools in this section, 18 have been completed and 7 are under construction.

However, he said that there is difficulty in starting the work of the overpass in Lahan due to the fact that the martyr's column at Golchakkar has not been removed.

Similarly, Shrestha complains that although the electricity poles in Mirchaiya have been removed, the poles in Bandipur, Golbazar and Lahan have not yet been removed and this is affecting the work. "Despite our efforts, the pole has not been removed yet," he said. "The pole is also the main obstacle." However, the construction company currently has only 20,000 cubic meters of river material. Shrestha said that only 15 days will be spent. According to him, an application has been submitted to Dhangadhimai Municipality and Lahan Municipality to withdraw river materials from Sarre Khola and Khutti Khola. However, no agreement has been reached yet. "If the work is done at the current pace, the work will be completed within the additional time," said Shrestha, "However, there should be no shortage of river materials, everyone should be serious about this. This is a project of national pride, and it is everyone's responsibility to support it." Niraj Shakya, Head of Kanchanpur Kamala Road Plan, East Section, said that the work is still going on, but after a week, the work will proceed at a faster pace.

He said that 51.74 percent of the work has been done in this section so far and the rest of the work has been completed within the added limits. However, Shakya says that in the eastern section as well as in the western section, poles and river materials have become a matter of concern.

"The contractors are now in the mood to work hard, but we had to create an environment for them," says Shakya, "We are coordinating with all the agencies here, if everyone cooperates, the work will be completed on time."
