In Thori Rural Municipality, established as the hub of mustard cultivation, the Homestay Management Committee has operated a mustard oil mill. Thori-5 Suvarnapur Sunakhari Intermediate Homestay Management Committee has brought mustard oil production mill into operation.
According to the chairman of the committee, Shambhuram Paudel, the mill was established with the investment of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) lake program.
"Taal program has established a mill by investing 530,000 rupees," he said.
He said that there is a plan to send off free pure mustard oil to the guests coming to stay at the homestay. "Nowadays common consumers believe that mustard oil is better for health than other oils," he said. Paudel said that 100 liters of oil can be produced by processing 3 quintals of mustard per day in the
mill. The total area of Thori Rural Municipality is 128 square kilometers. Of which 27.72 square kilometers (10,960 bighas) of land is cultivable. Thori rural municipality has the data of 1,842 bighas of cultivated land this year. Mustard was cultivated in about 17 percent of the area this year.
Torikheti in Thori has been attracting domestic tourists for a few years. Annually Mustard blossoms in the month of November/Pus, and after Pahelpur, there is a rush of domestic tourists.
'Since 4/5 years, traders reach the farm with trucks at the beginning of the season. Traders from Chitwan and Birgunj rush to the fields to buy mustard at the beginning of the season. Mustard crops of some farmers may be booked due to not being able to import. Farmers get the price they ask for in cash.
Mustard is cultivated in all the wards of the rural municipality, especially in wards No. 3, 4 and 5, more mustard is cultivated. When the Chitwan National National Park was established around 2020, the residents of Hile, Tinkani, Gaduwa, who were living in the dense forests of Nikunj, were transferred to live in Suvarnapur and mustard cultivation was also introduced in this area.
Mustard cultivation has proved to be an easy and rich cash crop for the farmers as there is no need to apply Godmel and irrigation once it is sown. Since there is no irrigation facility in this area and wild animals do not damage the mustard crop, most of the farmers cultivate mustard crop.
