Based on a special information, the police arrested an Indian citizen, Ravi Shankar Thakur, on the 10th of February, while renting a house in Birgunj Metropolitan City-12, Murali, and playing online gambling with electronic devices. The police recovered a laptop, router, headphones and other devices from Thakur's room.
This is the latest incident where a person involved in online fraud has been arrested. The police statistics also show that the cases of online fraud in the district are increasing every year. In the last financial year, the office received 196 complaints related to online fraud. Among them, 5 cases were registered in the district court.
By the end of February this year, 119 such complaints have been received. Those three cases have been registered in the district court. DSP Subas Bhatt, spokesperson of Parsa Police, most of the complaints are related to online shopping and lottery tickets.
Among those arrested, there are not only Nepalese but also Indian gangs and people involved in them. For the last few years, such gangs have also been active in betting on cricket matches. DSP Bhatt says, "Some educated and distinguished people have also fallen into the trap of thug gangs like this," he said, "They try to keep their identity a secret for fear of losing their social prestige."
