Bara police chief SP Santosh Tamang said that 37-year-old Mandal of Kalaiya-9 was beaten to death after he refused to punish him for violating discipline on Thursday midnight.
"It is clear from the collected evidence that he was beaten in the face with punches," he said, "He was beaten inside the room in the middle of the night." Mandal, who became unconscious after the beating, was initially taken to Kalaiya City Hospital by the center's consultant for treatment. After being referred from there, the doctor confirmed that he was dead when he was taken to the Kalaiya Provincial Hospital. In the rehabilitation center operated in a rented house, 14 people were living with the board, apart from the supervisors and consultants.
Inspector Rajesh Khatri of the District Police, who was assigned to the investigation, said that Tamanna Mansoor, the owner's brother, gave a statement to the police about the rehabilitation center which was put into operation for the reformation of the drug addicts and was not registered with the district administration.
"We have taken the permission of the court for an extension of seven days to detain the seven people who were arrested under delict of duty," he said, "As the incident is sensitive, the investigation is being carried out in a subtle way." The video footage shows the scene of physical torture and the gang-beating of the deceased as he tried to hide under the bed swing. The body of the deceased has been examined and handed over to the family at the Kalaiya Provincial Hospital.
