Paddy is yet to be sown in 20 percent of the fields in 12 districts of Lumbini Province. Lumbini Province, which contributes significantly to paddy production, has sown 80.64 percent by Shrawan 1.
The Lumbini Province Agriculture Development Directorate under the Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management and Cooperatives has stated that if there had been timely rainfall, 90 percent of the planting would have been done by now. Paddy is sown on an area of 313,720 hectares in Lumbini Province.
Milan Gaire, Information Officer and Senior Crop Protection Officer of the Provincial Agriculture Development Directorate, said that so far 243,041 hectares have been sown. ‘A lot of planting has been done in places with irrigation canals and timely rainfall,’ he said. ‘In some places, planting has been done quickly because there is sufficient water.’
The Directorate has stated that the sowing has been delayed due to lack of timely rainfall and insufficient expansion of irrigation facilities. The Directorate has stated that paddy sowing has been completed up to 100 percent in districts where culverts and irrigation structures have been built. The Directorate has stated that 95 percent of the sowing has been completed in Rupandehi, 97.5 percent in West Nawalparasi, 77 percent in Dang, 95 percent in Bardiya, 60 percent in Kapilvastu, and 60 percent in Banke. In the hilly districts, Gulmi, which produces the most rice, has completed 76 percent of the sowing. 85 percent in Palpa, 80 percent in Arghakhanchi, 100 percent in Rolpa, 96 percent in Rukumpur and 96 percent in Pyuthan have been completed.
According to the Directorate, out of a total of 63,550 hectares in Rupandehi, sowing has been completed in 60,373 hectares. According to the data sent by the district-based Agricultural Knowledge Center, sowing has been completed in 20,363 hectares out of 20,887 hectares in Nawalparasi, 40,269 hectares out of 66,265 hectares in Kapilvastu, 6,194 hectares out of 7,287 hectares in Palpa, and 4,971 hectares out of 6,541 hectares in Gulmi.
In Arghakhanchi, sowing has been completed in 5,408 hectares out of 6,760 hectares, and in Rolpa, 3,073 hectares out of 3,073 hectares. The directorate has stated that planting has been completed on 27,874 hectares out of 36,200 hectares in Dang, 20,268 hectares out of 33,780 hectares in Banke, 6,264 hectares out of 6,525 hectares in Pyuthan, 340 hectares out of 354 hectares in Rukum (East), and 47,643 hectares out of 50,150 hectares in Bardiya.
