Despite the late and weak monsoon rains this year, about 90 percent of paddy has been sown in Bardiya. Farmers are currently busy planting paddy with the help of rainwater.
Late planting has been done in Gulariya, Madhuban, Basgadhi, Thakurbaba Municipality and Badhaiyatal Rural Municipality areas of Bardiya. Planting is still going on in Gulariya and Badhaiyatal after the monsoon rains started to become active.
Milan Lodh, a farmer from Gulariya-10, said that planting could not be done on time due to lack of irrigation facilities and insufficient rainfall. He says that he has been waiting for the rain to fall as the work of uprooting the paddy is underway. Farmers from wards 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11 of Gulariya are waiting for sufficient rainfall for planting.
Farmer Dhan Bahadur Khatri of Badhaiyatal-2 said that since the monsoon rains were not sufficient, he started sowing by pumping water from the ground from Friday. He also said that last year, the sowing was completed before 15 Ashar.
Since Rajapur Municipality and Geruwa Rural Municipality have irrigation facilities from the Karnali River, the highest amount of paddy is sown in this area. Kamala Adhikari, Chief of the Integrated Agriculture and Livestock Development Office, Bardiya, said that almost 100 percent paddy has been sown in this area.
‘Apart from that, paddy has been sown in almost 90 percent of the area in Bardiya as well,’ she said. ‘100 percent sowing can be done within a week.’ Paddy is cultivated in 50,100 hectares in Bardiya.
