Chunguri Buki, also known as Chaunri Buki, has become a famous tourist spot in Rukum East for the past few years. The number of visitors to this area is increasing. Tourists come here during this season to enjoy the greenery and colorful flowers that appear with the onset of the monsoon. But recently, plastic and glass waste has started accumulating due to the indiscriminate dumping of garbage by visitors.
This Buki, located on the border of Bhume Rural Municipality-1 and Puthauttarganga Rural Municipality-11, is at an altitude of about 4,000 meters above sea level. Local tourism entrepreneur Dilchan Budha says that the number of visitors to this place is increasing day by day during this season. He said that there is a lot of activity here during holidays. ‘Especially on Saturdays and Sundays, this road is never empty.’ Thousands of people come to visit in a single day,' says Dinchal, 'Some come in the style of having a full picnic and bring various food and dry food from there and leave their waste behind.'
Local Nandu Budha said that littering in this place, which is also an important place for livestock grazing, affects the health of sheep, goats and cattle. 'They come to visit our lake from far and wide, it makes me happy.' But it is becoming very difficult because they litter. Our livestock eat the plastic that is thrown away and fall ill. Last year, some sheep even died,' he said, 'They also leave plastic and glass, which is disturbing us and affecting the place.'
Tourism entrepreneur Dilchan says that despite their best efforts to manage this type of waste in Chunguri Buki, it is not possible. He says that tourists themselves should be aware and the local government should also be strict in managing waste.
Local Dhankumar Pun said that they have been working to manage the waste generated there since requesting them not to litter in Chunguri Buki. Although the increase in the number of tourists is pleasant for everyone, he said that tourists have shirk their responsibility to manage the waste themselves and said that such awareness should be spread.
Ward Chairman of Bhume-1 Mankaji Pun admitted that despite all the efforts made by the rural municipality, the results have not been achieved. "On behalf of the municipality, we have requested the Forest Division and other stakeholders for its cleaning and management," he said. "Due to insufficient budget, major work has not been done. We have discussed with the executive that work should be done to facilitate traffic and properly manage waste in the coming days."
