From last Shrawan to Jestha, 46 people have died in road accidents in the district. During the same period, 452 people were seriously injured, according to the District Traffic Office, Bardiya.
District Traffic Chief Police Inspector Sandeep Belbase said that 908 people were injured, including 456 with minor injuries, in the 11-month period. He said that 544 road accidents occurred during this period.
In 081/082, 38 people died in road accidents in the district. Police Inspector Belbase said that 75 people were seriously injured and 683 were slightly injured in 482 road accidents during the same period.
Most of the accidents have occurred on the Postal Road. Police say that accidents are increasing due to vehicles driving at high speeds after the Nepalgunj to Gulariya section was converted into a 4-lane road.
Traffic Chief Belbase said that accidents are equally common on the Mahendra Highway and internal roads. He said that accidents have been caused by speeding, not following traffic rules, drunkenness, and negligence. ‘Vehicles that are driven without a permit, drunkenness, overloading, and speeding have been taken into action,’ he said. ‘Most of the vehicles that are taken into action are passenger vehicles and motorcycles that have consumed alcohol and drugs.’
The traffic police say that grazing on the roadside, encroachment on the road, and pedestrians not following traffic rules are becoming factors in road accidents. In addition, the police say that accidents have increased due to road structure, unsafe public vehicles, driver incompetence, negligence, ignorance of traffic rules, and inattention.
