A child has drowned in a river in Rupandehi while swimming. Another child has gone missing.

According to the District Police Office, Rupandehi, 9-year-old Akash Pasi of Omsatiya Rural Municipality-4, Rupandehi, and 11-year-old Armaan Pathan of the same place drowned on Friday evening while swimming in the Rohini River in Gujarpurwa, Rohini Rural Municipality-1.

Akash Pasi, who was found drowning in the river at 7:30 pm on Friday during a search operation, was taken to Bhim Hospital in Bhairahawa for treatment and was declared dead by the doctors, said DSP and Information Officer of the District Police Office, Rupandehi, Krishna Bahadur Chand.

The children, who had gone to immerse the Tahajiya idol in the river on Friday on the occasion of the Muharram festival celebrated by the local community in the Terai region, had started swimming at a secluded spot on the river, about 700 meters away from the immersion site.

Police Inspector Hariram Dangi of the Belahiya Area Police Office informed that a team including divers deployed from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal 27, and locals are continuing the search for another missing child, Arman.
