Angad Murau, 28, of Yashodhara Rural Municipality-2, Hardihawa, set his own motorcycle on fire to avoid a check by the Armed Police Force while smuggling vegetables from India.
While carrying chillies and plantains on his motorcycle, he tried to escape after seeing a team of the Armed Police Force of BOP Maryadpur patrolling in West Bhadehar along the Bargdawa-Purnihawa road section. When he could not escape, the police removed the petrol tank pipe of the motorcycle carrying the vegetables with an Indian number plate and set the motorcycle on fire, said Harit Baduwal, Chief Inspector of the Armed Police Force of Maryadpur BOP.
The motorcycle was completely damaged in the fire. Half of the two and a half quintals of chillies and plantains on the motorcycle were burnt to ashes. Armed Police Force Inspector Baduwal said that the Armed Police Force has increased surveillance and patrolling in the border area to prevent smuggling.
Murau was arrested by the Armed Police Force after he tried to escape by abandoning his motorcycle and was later handed over to the District Police Office for action. He had previously tried to burn his motorcycle twice for fear of being caught smuggling.
