Various indigenous and nationalist organizations have demanded that Tharu and Magar languages be made official languages in Lumbini Province. They submitted a memorandum to Lumbini Province Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya on Wednesday and made the demand.
Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha Dang has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding that Tharu language be recognized as the official language. Chairman of the assembly Ashok Kumar Chaudhary demanded that it be implemented immediately as there is a significant population of Tharu community in Lumbini Province and the recommendation of the Language Commission was also made.
Nepal Magar Sangh Lumbini Province Committee has also demanded that Magar language be implemented as the official language at the provincial level. The memorandum signed by the association's chairman Khaluprasad Pun Magar states that since Magar language is widely spoken in the province, its use should be ensured in government offices, information and service delivery.
The memorandum also demands the management of employees who know the Magar language, the provision of necessary training, and effective implementation in coordination with the local level. It is believed that this will make it easier for the Magar community to receive government services and strengthen the inclusive governance system.
The Magar Association has also demanded that Asad 1 be declared a public holiday throughout the province every year on the occasion of the Magar community's original cultural festival 'Bhume Parv'. The memorandum states that the festival based on nature worship will strengthen social harmony, cultural unity, and traditional lifestyle.
While receiving the memorandum, Chief Minister Acharya expressed his commitment that the provincial government would formulate necessary policies and laws for the protection and promotion of the language, culture, and civilization of the indigenous peoples. He said that the government is moving towards ensuring the rights of the community by formulating the Indigenous Peoples Act. Acharya also said that the provincial government is committed to strengthening linguistic equality, respect for cultural diversity, and social inclusion.
