Representatives of landless, squatters and unorganized settlers have submitted a memorandum to Lumbini Province Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya demanding an end to squatting.

In the memorandum submitted to the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers on Monday, the Landless, Squatters and Unorganized Squatting Struggle Committee has demanded an end to the human rights violation of squatting without giving citizens an alternative, stating that housing, livelihood and food security are the fundamental rights of citizens.

The memorandum expresses serious objection to the government's issuance of notices regarding squatting in various districts of Lumbini Province. The memorandum expresses objection to the government's issuance of notices regarding squatting without completing procedures such as identification, data collection and verification.

The committee has demanded that the issued notice regarding squatting be immediately revoked, that no forced squatting be carried out and that decisions be taken only in coordination with the local level and provincial governments.

It has been demanded not to proceed with the squatting process without ensuring alternative safe housing, to fully comply with human rights and constitutional provisions, and to continue the distribution of land ownership certificates through the Land Problem Resolution Commission.

Chief Minister Acharya expressed concern that the federal government is taking such actions that are causing citizens to be stranded at a time when they should be protected. He expressed the view that the federal government should reconsider this issue and said that the state should play the role of protector.

Stating that the provincial government has emphasized the need to find a long-term solution by coordinating among the three levels of government, he said that governments at all levels should take decisions keeping in mind the pressure and sensitivity of the citizens.
