Arjun Pokharel, the president of Nepali Congress Nawalparasi West, has resigned.

Pokharel, who won the post of district president by a large margin from the 14th general convention, has resigned citing health reasons. 'I could not be very active in the last parliamentary election, now the center itself has started a grassroots campaign in the villages. My health did not support me to be active in that too. That is why I resigned,' Pokharel said on the telephone.

Pokharel submitted his resignation by addressing the district party vice-president Bikram Yadav. After his resignation, a fight has started in the district over who will be the working president. Yadav said, 'Since you resigned before me, I should be the working president. But, I am not a member of the Congress's Mahasamiti.' There is a rule in the Congress that a district president must also be a Mahasamiti member. Bhim Bahadur Thapa (Bharat), who lost the parliamentary election from Constituency No. 2 to Congress in February last year, is in the running to become the acting president.

Thapa said, "All the friends of the district working committee have told me that I have to sign and take over the responsibility of the president. Both the party's vice presidents, district secretary Umesh Yadav and central member Radheshyam Pathak and the majority of the members have also signed and requested me to work as the acting district president immediately." He said that he had informed central president Gagan Thapa about the situation in the district.
