The Division Forest Office has issued a notice to clear the encroached forest area within 15 days.

The notice issued on Monday mentions the removal of illegally encroached houses and huts in places like Kothiyaghat, Machad Chowk, Sangam Basti of Gulariya, Khurkhurephanta of Barbardiya, Ram Basti, Amar Mahila Community Forest and other community forest areas.

Ram Gopal Chaudhary, Assistant Forest Officer of the Division Forest Office, said that if the encroachment is not removed, both the cost of clearing the encroached land and the punishment as prescribed by the Forest Act 2076 will be incurred.

The forest area has been encroached upon and the police office, campus, school, Red Cross and other institutions, and rental shops and markets have been operated. Divisional Forest Officer Vijay Raj Subedi said that about one thousand hectares of forest area has been encroached upon across the district.

Subedi said that preparations are underway to remove the encroachments of Machad and Kothiyaghat in the first phase. According to the Division Forest Office, structures such as gravel, blacktop roads, and electrification have been built in encroached forest areas in the past. The Division Forest Office has stated that physical structures have been built by encroaching on the community forest at Belwa Chowk in Madhuban Municipality.

The Red Cross building, a concrete rental building, and eight concrete buildings built in the forest area at Orali Bazaar, including Sapti Devi Community Forest Basgadhi, have been constructed in encroached areas, according to the Forest Office. There is a provision in the Act that concrete structures, except for kutchi buildings, cannot be constructed in community forests for office operation and security.
