Bhumikasthan Municipality has given the responsibility of producing honey by keeping bees to a farmers' cooperative. Pragati Farmers' Cooperative in Dhakawang of Wards 1 and 2 has been provided with 47 hives and materials. The municipality has declared Dhikura in Ward 9 and Dhanchaur in Ward 10 as potential bee pocket areas and has been providing technical assistance to farmers to increase beekeeping.
Dhakawang is also a potential area for beekeeping, so bees have been distributed to the cooperative under the Bee Pocket Program. Earlier, empty hives were distributed.
Deputy Mayor Balkrishna Banjade said that since there were no bees in the hives, beekeeping materials including bees were distributed to the cooperative group. He said that 47 hives of bees were brought from Palpa. Banjade advised farmers to keep bees properly as they can earn a living from beekeeping.
He said that beekeeping should be taken up as a business in the homes of all farmers affiliated with the cooperative. He said that the municipality will provide assistance by visiting the homes of agricultural technicians. Banjade said that the municipality aims to make the locals self-reliant by expanding the Dhakawang beekeeping area where the bees were distributed as a pocket area and producing honey from everyone's homes.
Out of the total cost budget of Rs 588,737, Rs 299,360 is a grant from the municipality and the rest is an investment from the cooperative, said Bhuvananda Bhusal, the chairman of the cooperative. He said that beekeeping will flourish as there is a lot of forest area here and there are enough flowering trees including chiuri, myal in the forest.
‘We have now received 47 beehives with the help of the municipality,’ he said, ‘We will increase the beehives along with honey production and distribute them throughout the village. We will develop Dhakawang as a beekeeping center.’
Pashupati Neupane, the operator of Vanshagopal Beekeeping Farm in Baganaskali, Tansen Municipality-7, trained the farmers affiliated with the cooperative on how to raise bees, how to protect bees, and how to produce honey.’ Local youth Tekraj Bhusal said that the villagers were excited after receiving the beehives with bees and all the materials.
