Fires have broken out in various community forests, including two Chakla forests in Banke. The District Forest Division Office has stated that the habitat of wildlife is in danger due to forest fires.
Sushil Subedi, Planning Officer of the District Division Forest Office, informed that about 4,000 hectares of area have been affected due to the forest fires that started a week ago. According to him, fire has broken out in 12 community forests including Shamsherganj Mathema Chakla Forest, Bhubarbhawani Chakla Forest, Jhinjhari Mahila Community Forest, Rapti Bhet Gulari Community Forest.
Stating that efforts are underway to extinguish the fire, Subedi mentioned that the fire that broke out inside the forest could not be brought under control. He said that the fire could not be controlled in time due to lack of manpower and resources, which is why the damage is happening. According to him, a 14-member fire control team has been formed in the district to control the forest fires. He informed that the current 2000-liter capacity tractor has been able to extinguish the forest fire only in the areas around the highway.
Stating that fire engines that can reach the inner parts of the forest are necessary to control the fire, Subedi, the planning officer of the forest office, said that the increasing drought has increased the fire in the inner areas.
There is 50,000 hectares of forest area in the district. Stating that awareness programs are being conducted to control forest fires, he said that the forest fire broke out due to some wrong people and behavior.
