Embankment work is underway here to protect Susta, which has been at risk every year due to erosion of the Narayani River.

According to Dr. Narayan Subedi, head of the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Office, Bharatpur, who is leading the embankment construction work in Susta, the work that began in the last week of Chaitra at a cost of 118.4 million rupees will be completed before the second week of Ashar.

The then Water Resources Minister Kulman Ghising, who visited Susta last Magh, had immediately allocated 118.4 million rupees for the river erosion. When Minister Ghising arrived, Susta residents informed him about the erosion and inundation here and conducted an on-site inspection. “He immediately called the ministry and ordered that money not be allocated from the emergency fund for Susta, so work is currently being done here from the same budget,” said local Munsi Harijan.

Subedi says that work is being done day and night with the aim of completing the risky work in a short period of time. ‘Time is short, but it is impossible to complete the work within that time,’ said Dr. Subedi. ‘I came to the Susta field on the first day after I was transferred to Chitwan. If the embankment work is not completed before the monsoon, the risk of the Susta flowing is increasing.’

Subedi informed that he reached the field in Susta in the second week of last Chaitra on the same day that the agreement was signed with the contractor. Currently, 175 workers are working hard at the embankment construction site. 50 tractors are being used daily to carry stones and fill the wire mesh on the banks of the Narayani River to control the river.

Embankment work is being done in a fast-paced area about one kilometer northeast of the Susta suspension bridge. Subedi says that an office has been opened near Susta to ensure that the work is done quickly and that staff are being deployed to monitor and ensure the quality of the work.

Work is being done continuously for 10 to 12 hours every day to complete the embankment work in Susta before the rains. Subedi says that the embankment work is gaining momentum because staff have been deployed in the field every day to continuously monitor the work being done here. Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Secretary Sarita Dawadi has also conducted an on-site inspection of the embankment construction work being done in Susta. ‘The on-site inspection by the secretary of the ministry also makes it clear how much the government prioritizes the embankment construction work being done in Susta,’ said Project Chief Dr. Subedi. ‘The work costing Rs 118.4 million has to be completed within about 90 days. Due to the late allocation of funds, the time period for completing the government process here has been shortened.’

Susta, which has 417 households, is home to about 3,600 locals. Every year, Susta has been facing erosion and inundation due to the floods of the Narayani River. Priority work is being done here to control the erosion and inundation of Susta due to the floods of the Narayani River during the rainy season.

Susta, which was an entire VDC until 2034 BS, is currently limited to one ward after being subjected to erosion and inundation. Most of the land of Susta, which borders India, has been under Indian encroachment, while the erosion of the Narayani River is also causing erosion of cultivable land.

West Nawalparasi Chief District Officer Deepak Nepal, Jesus Chief Bhagauti Yadav, and Susta Rural Municipality Chairman Teknarayan Upadhyay inspected the embankment work being done in Susta two days ago. Chief District Officer Nepal informed that the risky work of building an embankment on the Narayani River is being carried out rapidly in a short period of time due to the cooperation of the district administration and Susta Rural Municipality and the promptness of the head of the Project Management Office.

‘The Susta embankment work has proven that so much work can be done in Nepal in a period of about 90 days,’ said Chief District Officer Nepal, ‘There is great support from the ministry and local administration for this work.’
