Chhatradev Rural Municipality has cultivated potatoes and rice to show the youth that there is a future in the village through agricultural production. The 20 ropani area of barren land of Parshurameshwor Guthi in Serikhola, Ward No. 4 has been dug up and potatoes are now being produced.

30 quintals of potatoes have been produced. Last year, the barren land was dug up and rice was cultivated. Potatoes produced from cow dung and compost manure have been sold from the field. The municipality had graded the potatoes and determined the price. The wholesale price has been fixed at 48 to 43 rupees per kilogram and 53 rupees per kilogram for retail buyers.

Medium-sized potatoes are sold at Rs 40 per kg in the field and Rs 38 per kg in wholesale and Rs 45 per kg in the municipality, and small-sized potatoes are sold at Rs 35 per kg in the field, Rs 33 per kg in wholesale and Rs 40 per kg in the municipality office, said Vasudev Khanal, Chief Administrative Officer of Chhatradev Rural Municipality. About Rs 1 lakh was invested in planting potatoes by fertilizing them.

‘The reason why the municipality should cultivate them in this way is to set an example that good income can also be earned from agricultural enterprises in the village,’ said Khanal. ‘The youth are going abroad to find jobs in the villages and due to increasing migration to the cities in search of facilities, cultivable land is becoming vacant.’ This cultivation is done to show that the youth who want to do something have money, so they can do agricultural enterprises here.’ He said that preparations are being made to dig potatoes and cultivate rice. Last year, 60 bushels of rice were produced.

‘After the municipality started cultivating potatoes and rice, some farmers near the fields have started cultivating potatoes,’ Khanal said, ‘This is a matter of happiness. In this way, when farmers start cultivating food items and vegetables, including potatoes, the municipality hopes that the youth will engage in agricultural enterprises in the village when they earn income.’

Chairman Chandraman Shrestha said that the municipality has been producing organic potatoes. ‘All the youth and farmers of the entire municipality should engage in agricultural production,’ he said, ‘This is an example of production after cultivation.’ We have provided seeds, fertilizers, water and agricultural technicians to all farmers, our goal is to connect all farmers to agricultural production.’
