Police have taken three people, including an Indian national, into custody for causing unnecessary trouble and harassment to tourists at the Nepal-India border checkpoint Belahiya.

DSP and spokesperson of the Rupandehi District Police Office Krishna Kumar Chand said that they were taken into custody as part of a campaign to prevent unwanted activities and harassment of tourists at the border.

Two Nepalis and one Indian national were arrested. According to the Rupandehi District Police Office, the arrested include 26-year-old Neeraj Harijan of Siddharthanagar Municipality-1, 32-year-old Baiju Kalwar and 27-year-old Mulayam Yadav of Indian origin.

According to spokesperson Chand, there have been frequent complaints about Indian tourists and travelers being surrounded and harassed at the Belahiya checkpoint for years as soon as they cross the border.

Police say that they are forcing passengers to board buses and private vehicles of their choice against their will in order to earn commission, forcibly taking customers to hotels for commission, confusing and harassing tourists under the pretext of exchanging foreign currency, and facilitating customs clearance, among other things.
