Transport entrepreneurs are in trouble due to the difference in prices of petroleum products in Nepal and India. Petroleum products, including diesel, are being sold at cheaper prices in India than in Nepal. While diesel prices are high here, Indian freight vehicles are transporting goods to Nepal using cheap fuel. This has put transport entrepreneurs in the country in trouble.
Transport entrepreneurs of Rupandehi submitted a memorandum to the Chief District Officer on Monday afternoon, drawing attention to the problem. Led by truck entrepreneur Pankaj Rai, they reached the administration and expressed their complaints that Indian freight vehicles are transporting goods to every corner of Nepal using cheap fuel available in India. They mentioned in the memorandum that this has made Nepali vehicles competitively weak, making it difficult to operate their business.
‘Indian freight carriers are overloading against the standards,’ said businessman Rai, ‘This type of activity is creating unhealthy competition in the market and is also affecting road infrastructure.’ The businessmen have demanded that the movement data of Nepali and Indian freight vehicles at the customs checkpoint in Belhiya, Rupandehi be analyzed and necessary action be taken. They have mentioned that truck businessmen are unable to operate their business due to the adverse environment. ‘If this situation continues, they will have to be displaced from the business in the future,’ the memorandum says, ‘Therefore, the price of diesel should be adjusted in Nepal.’
In the memorandum, they have demanded stricter measures to prevent the uncontrolled entry of Indian vehicles into the country. They have demanded strict implementation of the existing legal provisions related to overloading. They have also demanded that policy arrangements be made to protect and promote domestic transport businessmen.
