In the 13th meeting of the Lumbini Provincial Assembly held on Monday, the Provincial Assembly members debated the issue of the increase in the price of petroleum products. They said that the excessive increase in fuel prices has seriously affected everything from the kitchen of the citizens to infrastructure development and demanded its control. In the meeting, Provincial Assembly member Krishnakushma Tharu accused the policy arrangements made on petroleum products of causing losses to the state and benefiting businessmen. She also said that the increase in fuel prices is unnatural in Nepal compared to other countries. Provincial Assembly member Indra Kumari Gahatraj said that since the formation of the federal government, the prices of everything from salt to gold have increased drastically and that the daily life of the people has become difficult. ‘This price increase should be withdrawn immediately,’ she said, ‘The federal government should be serious about this.’
Provincial Assembly member Hema Belbase objected to the arrangement of paying customs duty on ordinary household goods above Rs 100 brought from across the border and the increase in the price of petroleum products. She also complained that the police and customs officials behaved humiliatingly when citizens of the border area brought basic supplies. 'Who can understand the pain of the poor citizens?' she said, 'The increase in fuel prices has made it impossible to buy even goods worth Rs 100.'
What is the reason for diesel reaching Rs 234 in Nepal when it is available at Rs 88 in the Indian market across the border? She demanded that the federal government answer. She said that the unnatural increase in fuel prices has affected everything from irrigation to the kitchen of the citizens.
She urged the federal government to arrange a 'border pass' or concession card for border citizens and ensure cheap and accessible markets as the cost of transportation has increased due to the increase in fuel prices.
Provincial Assembly member Tara Thapa said that the livelihood of the poor has become more difficult due to the excessive price hike. Provincial Assembly members Meena Kumari Shrestha, Lokakumari Bishwakarma, Bishnu Prasad Panthi, Chandrakesh Gupta and others also said that the government should be serious about controlling the price hike after analyzing its impact.
