Two Pakistani women have been arrested from Kapilvastu on charges of theft and fraud of gold jewellery.
Pakistani nationals Baby Kasamul, 20, and Sarvana, 41, have been arrested on charges of involvement in theft and fraud incidents in the district headquarters Taulihawa and the major commercial center Chandrauta. Pakistani passports have been recovered from them.
District Police Spokesperson DSP Ripendra Kumar Singh said that the women stole a pair of gold earrings worth Rs 38 lakh from Surendra Gold and Silver Shop in Chandrauta, after confusing the shopkeepers who were looking at various types of jewellery and fled. After the theft, they tried to hide their identity by wearing a burqa over their masks when they came out of the shop.
The shop owner immediately went to the market area and searched for the jewellery. After they were found a short distance away, the police were informed. They were then taken into custody by the Ward Police Office, Chandrauta. Before that, the woman had cheated and fled from a shop in the district headquarters of Taulihawa.
They had taken a large amount of gold jewelry by giving her a small amount of gold jewelry at the shop. They had given her a chain and two pairs of earrings saying that it was 75 percent gold and had taken another pair of earrings from the shopkeeper. They had gone out to show the earrings they exchanged at the shop to a friend and did not return.
Immediately after the theft incident in Chandrauta became public, the shopkeeper in Taulihawa went to the police to file a complaint saying that he had been cheated after checking the gold given by the woman and found that the jewelry contained 7 percent gold.
The police have also reported that they had stolen from a gold and silver shop in the Yogikuti area of Butwal. It has been found that they have been adopting the style of stealing gold on the pretext of buying jewelry by showing cash. They have also recovered 86,040 Nepali rupee notes of 10 to 1,000 rupees from them. Similarly, 3 Pakistani rupees of 10 rupees have also been recovered.
The police are investigating both women for theft and fraud. The women, who have a one-month Nepal visa, came to Kathmandu on March 24. Their visa expires on April 22. They were remanded in custody by the court on Wednesday for 7 days. The purpose of their visit to Nepal is being investigated. They spoke Hindi clearly and used to do business in the shop.
