The deputy mayor of Purbanagar, who is harvesting corn on the roadside, says, ”What's the shame in working hard to eat?”

Having served as a public representative for five years, she said that she will not stop working even after reaching the position as she is the daughter of a farmer. “I have not committed corruption while holding the position, I have not begged or stolen from anyone,” she said. “There is no shame in selling one’s labor and eating. No matter how high one’s position, as a farmer, one feels happy when one works and eats.”

Even though she is not in the post of former deputy mayor, she must be busy with party work. However, former deputy mayor of Madhuban Municipality in the district, Shubha Rani Tharu, is currently busy selling roasted corn on the roadside. She sells roasted corn every day at Machar Chowk, Madhuban-4. Customers flock to the chowk when she is roasting corn. She said that she is selling roasted corn because it is the maize season now. Apart from this, she says that she is earning a good income from animal husbandry and vegetable farming. Elected as the deputy mayor of the former city from the Maoist Center, she is now a provincial committee member from the UML after changing parties. She cultivates corn on her 10 katta land. She also grows vegetables and other crops. Her family has 11 members. Everyone lives together. She, who served as a public representative for five years, said that she would not stop working even after reaching the position because she is the daughter of a farmer. ‘I did not commit corruption while holding the position, I have not eaten by begging or stealing from anyone,’ she said, ‘There is no shame in selling my labor and eating, no matter how high a position I reach, I feel happy when I eat by working as a farmer.’

She from Madhuvan-4 said that she earns 2 to 3 thousand rupees a day by selling corn. Along with her business, she also does politics. She was a Maoist cadre at the time. She said that she joined the UML two years ago after her ideas did not align with the Maoists. She heard that she used to bring corn produced in her own fields to Machar Chowk every day and sell it after roasting it.

She has great support and trust from her husband. Her husband Phularam takes care of the crops, vegetables and cows and buffaloes kept at home. He said that he did animal husbandry and agriculture even when his wife was the deputy mayor. ‘Now, I feel happy when I work with my wife,’ he said, ‘If I had been educated, I would have been given a job, but if I had not been educated, this job is fine.’ We are enjoying this.’

Mekh Bahadur Gurung, spokesperson for Madhuvan Municipality, said that the hard work of the former deputy mayor was exemplary and commendable for the current people’s representatives. ‘Being a people’s representative is not a government job,’ he said, ‘The people have sent me to serve for some time.’ He has taught me the lesson that after the term is over, one should work hard and earn a living.’
