Butwal Sub-metropolitan City is going to provide specialist doctors and lab testing services to the elderly over 70 years of age residing in its area. The municipality is going to reach the homes of the senior citizens and provide free treatment along with disease diagnosis.
The sub-metropolitan city has stated that it is going to provide such services through the 'Major Health Treatment Program with Mother and Father'. It is said that patients over 60 years of age and those with disabilities who cannot come to the health camps conducted for senior citizens at the ward health center of the municipality will now also get such services at home.
Sub-metropolitan City Mayor Khelraj Pandey said that free treatment services including specialist doctors, modern lab tests and medicines will be provided to the parents of the city to end the compulsion to go to the hospital in old age.
‘The senior citizen health care that has been started for two years to end the compulsion to go to the hospital in old age is being made more effective,’ he said, ‘The scope of services has been expanded under the municipality’s own initiative and management.’ According to him, the health service has been expanded by targeting citizens who are unable to walk, who do not have relatives to care for them at home, who are destitute and who are deprived of quality health care services including specialists due to financial constraints.

Yubaraj Pandey, head of the sub-metropolitan health branch, said that discussions have been held with the Lumbini Provincial Laboratory and private hospitals in the Butwal area for the agreement. ‘Follow-up will also be continued by treating the patient according to his needs,’ said Pandey. ‘We will first conduct a lab test of the patient and the next day we will deliver the medicine along with a specialist doctor.’ According to Yubaraj, head of the health department, in the first phase of the ‘Ba-Ama Sanga Sang Nagar Chief Health Treatment Program’, the sub-metropolitan city has been providing treatment services by conducting health camps for all senior citizens above 60 years of age in all 19 ward offices of the city every six months. More than 2,200 senior citizens had availed the services in the camp six months ago.
In the process of expanding the same program, the municipality believes that the health treatment of senior citizens will be more effective after this service is provided to every home in the second phase. Mitramani Khanal, Chief Administrative Officer of the sub-metropolitan city, said that when he visited the homes of senior citizens above 70 years of age, many of them had sons and daughters-in-law abroad or outside the home for employment and business and it was seen as very necessary to take care of them. "This type of health program is being implemented to respect senior citizens and boost their self-confidence," he said. "It is also the responsibility of the state to implement such programs."
