Police have destroyed a large area of illegal opium cultivation in Rolpa. The illegal opium cultivation in the northeastern part of the district was destroyed by the police on Tuesday morning.
According to the District Police Office, opium cultivation in an area of 42 ropanis, including 22 ropanis in Gurase Lek, 8 ropanis in Jalaki, 6 ropanis in Tharpu Tower, 1 in Ghorabang and 6 ropanis in Luchad, was destroyed in Thabang Rural Municipality-4.
Rolpa Police Chief DSP Birendra Bir Bishwakarma said that the police were mobilized after receiving information about opium cultivation by locals. DSP Bishwakarma said that even though the opium plants were destroyed, the cultivators could not be identified.
Following information about opium cultivation in a large area, a team of 35 people led by DSP Bishkarma, Chief District Officer Ganga Bahadur Chhetri, Deputy Superintendent of Armed Police Dipendra Pandey, and Chief of the National Investigation Department Dinesh Pokharel was mobilized.
In previous years, the police had destroyed opium plants in that area. The police have said that they are searching for the farmers and people who help them in that area. The area where opium is cultivated is about 81 kilometers away from Libang, the headquarters of Rolpa. Some time ago, an illegally planted opium plantation was also destroyed in Pachhabang of Parivartan Rural Municipality in north-western Rolpa.
