The five-day Rumindehi Mai Mela held in Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, to mark Chaite Purnima, ended on Sunday. The fair was organized with the support of the Lumbini Cultural Municipality from Wednesday with the aim of preserving local art, culture and traditions. Devotees come to the fair to worship and shave their heads.
Omkar Pandey, a central member of the Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh, said that devotees come to visit Rumindehi Mai for family happiness, wealth and fulfillment of desires. 'The Mayadevi temple was called Rumindehi Mai 40/50 years ago,' he said. 'Since there is a popular belief that vows made here will be fulfilled, there is an equal number of people who worship and visit the temple. That is why even now, the Chaite Purnima fair is held here in the name of Rumindehi Mai.'
