The construction of the Madan Bhandari Highway from Madichaur in Rolpa to Bagchaur in Salyan via Lapchun, Ghartigaun, Ota, and Jinabang is progressing at a rapid pace.
The construction of the section from the zero point in Madichaur in Rolpa Municipality has been underway for one and a half years. The locals are happy that the 52-kilometer road construction of the Rolpa-Salyan section of the Madan Bhandari Highway, which extends from Shantipur in Jhapa to Jogbudha in Dadeldhura, is progressing at a rapid pace. The construction of the Libang-Darbot section from Madichaur to Ghartigaun is also progressing at a rapid pace. The construction of the road has been undertaken by Kumar Shrestha Nirman Sewa Pvt. Ltd., based in Kanchanpur. The Madan Bhandari Highway Office under the Roads Department had signed a construction agreement with the company a year and a half ago.
The road section, which can be constructed with a budget of around Rs 4 billion, will be blacktopped within the next one and a half years. The company's engineer Kishorraj Pandey said that the target is to complete the construction work on time. The company is working on widening the road, building drains, walls and gravelling it in the first phase. 'We will also start the blacktop work soon, for which work is being done at a rapid pace in all areas,' said the company's engineer Pandey.
The width of the road is 10 meters, and 7 meters will be blacktopped, as mentioned in the agreement. The locals are very happy that the road has been widened. According to Amarsingh Ghartimagar, the chairman of Madi Rural Municipality, local level people's representatives have been helping to quickly construct the road and facilitate various problems. The road will connect many villages in Madi and Gangadev, including Rolpa Municipality, by road. These areas are known for producing potatoes, apples, vegetables and fruits. The road section reaching Bagchaur in Salyan will cover the villages with orange farms and vegetable crops in Salyan. Bagchaur Municipality in Salyan is a village famous for fruit production.
Work had begun on the Rolpa-Salyan section as per the government's plan to construct a 1,200-kilometer-long road on the Madan Bhandari Highway within a few years. Initially, the highway would not touch Rolpa, but due to protests and demands from the district residents, the government reconsidered the decision to extend the route to Salyan via Rolpa and revised it. The latest decision of the government is to extend the road from Khungri in Rolpa to Ghodagaun, Jedbang and Madikhola in Pyuthan.
Engineer Shankar Poudel of the Madan Bhandari Highway Construction Office in Surkhet said that work is underway rapidly on the Rolpa-Salyan section. The government had decided to bring the plan with the aim of connecting many districts of central Nepal via an east-west road.
Following the demands and requests of the locals, the highway, which had already begun construction from Gulmi via Pyuthan three years ago, was revised to connect Surkhet via Khungri (Chaturbhuj)-Ghodagaun-Madichaur-Ghartigaun-Jinabang in Rolpa and Damachaur-Khalanga-Kubinde Tal-Baluwa Sangrihi in Salyan. Before that, the government had announced that the construction of the route would begin via Pyuthan-Dang-Surkhet. The East-West Highway and the Mid-Hill Pushpalal Highway, which have already been constructed, have not touched Rolpa.
After the residents of various districts including Rolpa submitted a letter of appeal, the then cabinet meeting revised the decision to build the Madan Bhandari highway to connect Chure, Inner Madhesh and other areas. According to that plan, the construction of the road was started from Shantinagar in Jhapa.
The road will reach from Dharan, Chatara in Sunsari, Gaighat, Katari in Udayarpur, Sindhuli Madi in Sindhuli, Hetauda in Makawanpur, Gaindakot in Nawalparasi, Rampur in Palpa to Rindi, Tamghas, Shimaltari, Khalanga in Pyuthan, Ghodagaun-Madichaur-Ghartigaun-Jinabang in Rolpa, via Salyan to Botechaur, Baddichaur in Surkhet, Simchaur in Doti, Bpinagar, Sahajpur in Kailali, Budar in Dadeldhura, Jogbudha and Rupal.
