With only a few days left for the election of members of the House of Representatives on Falgun 21, political parties and their candidates in Rukum East are making their final preparations . Nepali Communist Party (NCP) coordinator and candidate from this constituency Pushpa Kamal Dahal has returned after completing his election meetings in person, while candidates from other parties are continuing to reach their doorsteps .
Even though Dahal returned to Kathmandu after visiting various places in all three municipalities of the district from Falgun 1 to 7, he is still continuing his election campaign, informed Ganeshman Pun, coordinator of the NCP's election campaign committee. 'Our coordinator and candidate have visited most of the places in the district and met voters . He has returned to Kathmandu as he needs to visit other constituencies as well.' But we have deployed leaders and cadres of our party and organization to the doorsteps.' Coordinator Pun also said that Dahal will return to his constituency only after reaching Chitwan, where he has his voter list, and casting his vote. Congress candidate Kusumdevi Thapa, UML candidate Lilamani Gautam, Progressive Democratic Party (Pralopa) candidate Sandeep Pun, and others who are in the constituency, have continued to meet voters. UML's Gautam has visited almost all the villages and toll plazas of Puthauttaranga and Bhume rural municipalities and met voters, and said that he is focused on the wards of Sisne rural municipality.
Congress candidate Thapa said that after the election meetings in Sisne and Puthauttarganga, she has been deployed in the Hukam-Maikot area of Puthauttarganga. Similarly, Pralopa candidate Sandeep Pun also informed that after completing the election programs in Puthauttarganga and Bhume, he is now focusing on the district headquarters.
In Rukum East, where a total of 11 candidates from different parties are in the election fray, all the candidates are claiming to win. A few days ago, after reaching Kathmandu after meeting voters, Dahal said at an event that he had reached Rukum during the election campaign and that he had relaxed in Rukum.
UML candidate Gautam said that the people of Rukum East are hungry for development and that life here is very difficult. He said that meeting voters in far-off places and knowing about their happiness and sorrows is not a 'luxury' and said that he has suffered a lot. 'We have to go to the people's homes and courtyards once, but the common people here who are living their lives here are suffering a lot.' They are even more sad,' he said.
Congress candidate Thapa and Pralopa candidate Pun have also expressed similar views on this issue and objected to Dahal's statement. Stating that Rukum East is mired in the darkness of underdevelopment and illiteracy, Congress' Thapa said that Dahal may have felt 'relaxed' because he came in the style of a tourist, but that was not the reality. Pralopa's Pun said that it was natural for Dahal to feel 'relaxed' because he was able to eat sweets and snacks by beating up the cadres who were busy and going to villages that were considered easy, saying that they had reached remote villages where Dahal could not reach.
On this issue, NCP's election campaign coordinator Pun interpreted it as meaning that he reached Rukum East, the 'base of the people's war', to follow his old footsteps and meet his former colleagues and the people. 'The matter can be understood in any way.' But this incident should be understood in a positive way,' he said.
At present, all the parties and candidates in Rukum East are making their last efforts to please the voters. They say that they are reaching out to the voters and telling them their plans and agendas and asking for votes. After federalization, Rukum East is called the 'youngest district' after being separated from the former Rukum East in 2074, and it is the only Himalayan district in Lumbini Province.
After 2064, the former Maoists have been winning all the elections held in the former Rukum and Rukum East after 2074. This time, the discussion about this area has increased after Dahal, the coordinator of the NCP, who is also a former Prime Minister, came to contest the election. Candidates other than Dahal, said that he is not a local and has asked them to vote for them because they are aware of the possibilities and problems here. In this regard, Dahal is saying that he came to Rukam East many times during the armed struggle and has been living there since then, and that this is his 'workplace'.
