It's sad that people are asking for votes by repeating the same old issues.

What you should know

Residents of Gulariya-10, Ratnapur, which borders India, are busy harvesting mustard seeds. Even though the elections are approaching, household chores have not given the residents time to participate in political programs.

However, they are not silent. In their free time, they are found discussing who to vote for this time to solve their problems. Farming and labor are their main occupations. The border villages are inhabited by Tharu, Madhesi, Muslim and some hill communities.

The economic condition of the common people here has not improved. Therefore, they are more concerned about earning a living than elections. Although the party has been making promises for years, it has not been able to make them self-employed yet. They are demanding flood control, construction of collapsed bridges, prevention of wildlife, and solving farmers' problems from the candidates who come door to door.

The local Ramsevak Lodh leader says that he only promises to solve the problems. He said that even though he deceives them by saying that he will fulfill their demands while seeking votes, no one returns after the elections.  ‘There are problems related to farmers, flood control, employment, etc.,’ he said, ‘We understand that the candidates’ assurances are for the day of voting.’

There is a lack of education, health, employment and development in the settlement. As the election for the House of Representatives member is approaching, the candidates have intensified their meetings with voters. Locals said that the candidates are repeating the same issues and seeking votes.

Local Madhuri Ahir said that she does not have any faith in the completion of the election issues brought by the new and old candidates. ‘They say they will complete all the work,’ she said, ‘When the demands are never fulfilled, trust is eroding.’ Manoj Teli of Gulariya-9 said that there is a problem with irrigation and fertilizers for farmers.

Krishnavati Godiya of Gulariya-10 expressed her grief that security personnel used to arrest and torture her when she brought fertilizers from India when she could not get them in her own country. "No leader seems to be responsive to the problems of the people," she said. "They even say they will do impossible things when seeking votes."
