Gautam of the Nepali Congress, who has been elected three times, is also a candidate this time. In 2074, Gautam defeated the then UML leader Bamdev Gautam by getting 44,834 votes. Bamdev got 44,076 votes.
In the 2079 House of Representatives election, Gautam of the Nepali Congress defeated his rival Laxman Gyawali of the UML. Gautam got 30,611 votes and Gyawali got 26,155 votes. Thakur Singh Tharu, the then candidate of the Nagarik Unmukti Party, got 23,923 votes.
Locals say that candidates from parties including the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Janamat Party (JSP), and RPP are challenging the old parties.
Janak Tharu, 28, of Basgadhi Municipality-2, said that the political situation has changed after the Gen-G movement. “The new generation wants change,” he said. “The new generation also needs honest, mature candidates who work for the country.” He said that the old parties have faced additional challenges this time because the situation is different.
Candidates from the new parties have been claiming to defeat those from the old parties, while the old and big parties have been claiming that their organizations are strong and that victory is certain.
