It has been some time since Brijesh Kumar Gupta, who was elected to the House of Representatives twice and the Constituent Assembly twice, left the CPN-UML. However, in the meantime, he has not been able to decide whether to join any party or remain independent.

Gupta says that he left the UML after the two big parties showed arrogance and arrogance instead of good governance and the UML leadership showed no signs of improvement.

Talking to Kantipurkarmi at his residence in Taulihawa, the district headquarters, on Thursday, Gupta said, "If I had contested the election from the UML party in Kapilvastu-2, victory would have been certain, but I have remained independent because I feel that it is more important to work with my own discretion at this time than victory."

He also said that while leading the party, he was faced with disappointment and distortion from all sides. "As a result, the Genji movement occurred. In this process, the country had to bear a huge loss of life and property," he said, "That is why I left the party so that we can continue our journey from a different perspective."

He, who has also been the Federal Minister of Physical Planning and Law and Justice twice, also said that he expected the UML/Congress party to introspect and improve after the Genji movement. ‘However, I left the party because they ignored the Genji movement and tried to cover up their weaknesses and continue in the old ways,’ he said.

He suddenly entered politics in 2056 BS after leaving his job as a permanent engineer at the Nepal Electricity Authority. He was initially elected as a member of the House of Representatives from the RPP, twice as a member of the Constituent Assembly from the Tamalapa in 2064 BS and 2070 BS, and as an independent member of the House of Representatives with the UML’s sun symbol in 2074 BS. In the fifth election of 2079 BS, he was defeated by Congress leader Surendra Raj Acharya by a narrow margin.

Leaders should be brave enough to take responsibility for their good deeds, says 54-year-old Gupta. ‘The main problem of the country is corruption and good governance,’ he said. ‘It is sad that corruption needs to be eradicated with a strict policy, but it is being covered up by the party.’

Brijesh, who entered politics after the death of his father Bhagwandas Gupta, is considered an honest and loyal leader in Kapilvastu, says Haram Sharif Musalman, chairman of the board of directors of Kapilvastu Multiple Campus. ‘He has a good public base and personal hold here,’ he said. ‘His presence has special significance during the election campaign.’

Gupta alleges that leaders of various parties are involved in several corruption scandals in the country and that leaders of big parties are protecting him. ‘This is what I do not understand.’ That is why I left the party because I wanted to work with a vision and mission to be accountable to the people,' he said.
