Of the four sugar mills in West Nawalparasi, only two have come into operation this year.

This year, only Lumbini Sugar Mill and Bagmati Sugar Mill in Sunwal have come into operation.

Indira Sugar Mill, which was operational last year, has not come into operation yet. This mill has yet to pay the farmers' arrears. Mohini Sugar Mill has also not been operational for a few years.

This year, the government has fixed the minimum support price of sugarcane at Rs 620 and subsidy at Rs 35 per quintal. The government will also give Rs 35 as subsidy to farmers from the previous year this year.

This year, Nawalparasi is expected to produce up to 1.2 million quintals of sugarcane. The mill manager Tek Pun said that sugarcane crushing work is going on in full swing at Lumbini Sugar Mill Sunwal.

Farmers are now cutting sugarcane in a hurry and selling it to sugar factories and crushers in the desired location. Since the crushers give cash immediately, farmers have been buying sugarcane at a slightly cheaper price than the market price. Sugar mills, on the other hand, weigh the sugarcane and prepare invoices and pay only after some time.
