The CPN-UML has single-handedly recommended the names of party vice-chairman Gokarna Bista and leader Pradeep Gyawali from Gulmi in separate elections.

The UML regional committee meeting held on Sunday recommended the single name of Vice President Gokarna Bista from Gulmi Constituency No. 2. Earlier, Gyawali's name was unanimously selected and sent by the regional committee of Constituency No. 1. Only Gyawali's name was proposed from Constituency No. 1. However, despite the large number of aspirants from Constituency No. 2, the regional committee decided to recommend Bista's name as a single name.

Discussions were held on the names of six aspirants including Vice President Bista, Ram Kumari Jhankri, and Rajendra Aryal for the candidacy in Constituency No. 2. However, regional coordinator Rit Bahadur Thapa said that Bista was recommended as a single name because he was seen as a popular candidate for victory.

‘Even though there are many names in the discussion and among the aspirants, Bista is the only candidate who will win,’ he said, ‘That is why his name has been recommended as a single candidate based on more than two-thirds of the suggestions received in the regional committee.’

Bista has been winning all the parliamentary elections in Gulmi-2 since 2056 except 2064. The Maoists won in 2064. In the last election of 2079, Bista also defeated Ram Kumari Jhankri, who was a candidate from the Congress, Maoists and Unified Socialists.

Jhankri, who left the Socialists and chose the UML, had also been aspiring to contest the election from Gulmi-2. However, after Bista’s single name was recommended, Jhankri has faced difficulties.
