Police have claimed that 17-year-old Ishan Sharma of Kanchan Rural Municipality-3, Dhaulagiri Chowk, Rupandehi, died in a car accident. The family, however, has been claiming that Ishan was murdered and not hit by a car. They had even held a press conference on Poush 20, saying that he was murdered and thrown into a road drain.
The District Police Office Rupandehi then issued a press release and made public the facts and details revealed during the investigation.
The press release issued by the district police states that Isan, who was found unconscious in a drain near his house on Poush 2, was pulled out of the drain by his relatives and taken to Lumbini Provincial Hospital in Butwal, where doctors declared him dead.
‘Based on the incident of Isan’s death and the details after the incident, it appears that he died due to a vehicle collision,’ said District Police Spokesperson DSP Suraj Karki.
According to Karki, during the investigation, it was revealed that he had fled after being hit by a force vehicle with registration number Lu 2 Kha 4948. During the search for the vehicle, it was learned that it had been secretly repaired and brought back into operation in Mainabagar, Butwal-2.
After that, on December 20, the police mobilized and took the driver of the vehicle under control from Golpark in Butwal Sub-metropolitan City-3 while he was coming from Baglung. In addition, two other people were taken under control from the driver's house and further investigation is underway at the Area Police Office, Saljhandi.
According to the police, Isan went missing on December 20. During the search, information was received that Isan was found unconscious in a drain on the Fireline-Lumbini road section between Dhaulagiri and Sungabha Chowk on the second day. By the time the police reached the spot, his relatives had pulled him out of the drain and taken him to Lumbini Provincial Hospital for treatment by ambulance, according to the police.
The police have taken into custody the absconding driver Santosh Chhetri, a resident of Bareng Rural Municipality-Chisha in Baglung and a resident of Thakalichowk, Kanchan Rural Municipality-4 in Rupandehi, Dipendra Bhandari Chhetri, a resident of Sainamaina Municipality-5, who helped in driving the vehicle, and Sandesh Chhetri of the same place and are investigating.
Although the family claimed that the death was suspicious, District Police Chief Superintendent of Police Pradeep Bahadur Chhetri said that it was confirmed that the death was due to a vehicle collision based on evidence including CCTV footage from the scene. ‘We have not failed in the investigation,’ he said, ‘The investigation has also confirmed that the death was due to a collision.’
He requested to trust the evidence obtained from the scene and the police investigation. He said that the driver himself has already admitted that the vehicle he was driving caused the accident.
