A statue of Karn Bahadur Rana Magar, the youngest recipient of the British Army's highest gallantry medal, the 'Victoria Cross', has been installed.
Rana Magar, who had a permanent residence in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-5, Gulmi, received the gallantry medal from King George V at Buckingham Palace in 1919.
A statue of Rana Magar was installed in the premises of the Varse Photo Gallery under the leadership of the Varse Bhupu Sangh. Sculptor Yama Bahadur Thapa made the statue for 1.55 million rupees. Three hundred kilos of brass have been used in this statue.
Born in 1898, Karna Bahadur joined the British Army and served in the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles, where he participated in the Palestine Campaign with the 232nd Infantry Brigade under the 75th Infantry Division.
During the battle against the German army in the El Kefr area of Palestine on 10 April 1918, he displayed extraordinary courage by using a Lewis gun to suppress machine guns and attacks amidst heavy shelling and bombing.
For his heroic deeds in the battle, he was awarded the Victoria Cross through the London Gazette on 21 June 1918. Former Army Subedar Major Anier Captain Pitambar Thapa said that Karna Bahadur Nepal was the first person to receive the medal at the age of 19.
Sculptor Thapa said that he was very happy to make a witness to Nepal's history into a statue. Former British Army Lieutenant Kul Bahadur Budhathoki led the construction of the statue and raised all the expenses. Naru Budhathoki, treasurer of the Varse Bhupu Sangh, said that it was under his leadership that the establishment of the Varse Photo Gallery and the statue was possible.
Karna Bahadur died on July 25, 1973, at the age of 74 in Litung Barse, Gulmi. So far, 13 British soldiers from Nepal have received the Victoria Cross.
Hem Bahadur Rana, Ward Chairman of Satyawati Rural Municipality-8, praised all the former soldiers who played a role in the construction of the statue. 'Karna Bahadur is our proud history, we feel proud even hearing his name,' he said, 'The fact that we can install the statue in Barse is an appreciation of his contribution.' He said that now everyone can come to the photo gallery and recognize and see their ancestors.
