17 Congress candidates recommended from Arghakhanchi

What you should know

For the upcoming National Assembly and House of Representatives member elections to be held on Magh 11 and Falgun 12, Congress Arghakhanchi has recommended the names of 17 candidates for direct and proportional representation for the House of Representatives and the National Assembly. Of those recommended, 8 are for direct representation, 6 for proportional representation, and 3 for the National Assembly.

District Secretary Krishna Prasad Khanal said that former State Minister Revati Prasad Bhusal, Lumbini Province Joint General Secretary Bishnu Prasad Khanal, former District President Kamal Prasad Bhusal, General Convention representatives Dr. Mukti Ram Shrestha, Dr. Jay Bahadur Tandon, Lekhnath Pokharel, District Vice President Baburam Bhusal and Tara Prasad Shrestha have been recommended for the House of Representatives directly.  Ram Bahadur BC, former district president Pitambar Bhusal and invited former central member Balkrishna Pandey were recommended.

The Congress center had directly circulated the district working committee to send the names of two men and one woman by November 24. Congress youth had warned that the old leaders who had been candidates since 2051 should be dismissed without recommending them again, and that they should recommend one name each for direct, proportional and the National Assembly. After pressure, the district working committee meeting held for two days last Thursday and Friday stopped recommending candidates.

Among the recommended candidates, Revati Prasad Bhusal, Dr. BC and Pushpa have so far become MPs and candidates. The youth had pressured not to recommend new-faced candidates. Revati won the 2048 and 2051 elections and became the Minister of State for Tourism. For the subsequent elections, she was only recommended, not given a ticket. BC became a candidate three times. However, she was defeated. Pushpa was elected from the then constituency no. 2 in 2064. In 2074, she became the deputy speaker by becoming a proportional representation MP. She was defeated in three elections. Pushpa has now chosen proportional representation.

District President Keshav Shrestha informed that due to the large number of aspirants, more candidates were recommended than those specified by the center, contrary to the criteria set by the center. He said that despite all efforts to reach an agreement, the names of all candidates were sent. Congress youth are angry that the recommendations were not made according to their demands. Congress Province Assembly 2 Deputy President Arjun Pokharel said that they will submit a memorandum to the center after the district did not listen to their demands.

‘We have tried to make the Congress better and win,’ he said, ‘We have no other interests.’ If we give tickets against the demands of the youth, we will not campaign, we will only vote.' Youths supported by General Secretary Gagan Thapa are continuously protesting against the District Working Committee, demanding that a new face be nominated as a candidate in the upcoming elections.
