For the first time in the district, a camp has been held to test for reproductive disorders and infertility in livestock by using ultrasound at farmers' sheds.
In Ribdikot Rural Municipality, reproductive abnormalities and infertility of cattle and buffaloes were tested by visiting farmers' sheds.
Geeta Nepali, head of the rural municipality's animal service branch, said that reproductive abnormalities and infertility of cattle and buffaloes were tested using cutting-edge technology. Even the farmers were surprised when veterinarians arrived at the sheds carrying ultrasound machines. Rural Municipality Chairman Narayan Bahadur Karki said that the municipality organized a camp and provided services on animal reproduction through experienced doctors.
In the camp, pregnancy tests and infertility of animals were identified using modern technology, different from the traditional method. Kamala Nepali of Khasyuli, Ribdikot-3, said that she was surprised to see the machine coming to her home shed.
She was happy that she came to the shed and received treatment and medicine. ‘Even though we have been raising livestock, we did not know that such technology had been developed,’ she said. ‘I am happy to know that such technology can be used for treatment at a time when many people are giving up raising livestock.’
Sita Kunwar of Palungmainadi Dabka, Ribdikot-7, said that she was surprised to see veterinarians and doctors come to the cowshed with new technology for the first time. ‘I had never seen a video X-ray of a human being like this before,’ she said. ‘Two cows were artificially inseminated. After looking at it like this, I realized that one was not pregnant. This is the first time I have seen a video X-ray like a human being.’
Under the Ribdikot Agriculture Project of the rural municipality, Anshu Pradhan, a veterinarian from Heifer International, visited the cowsheds of farmers for two days in Khyaha, Deurali, Khasyauli Bhairavsthan, Kusumkhola, and Palungmainadi and informed the farmers about the treatment of animals by skilled doctors, reproductive disorders, and prevention of infertility.
The rural municipality has also distributed cattle and buffaloes to farmers under subsidy. Heifer International Nepal has provided financial and technical support to solve health-related problems seen in the cattle and buffaloes raised by the farmers themselves, including those distributed under subsidy. Rural Economic Development Association Reda Palpa has been facilitating farmers in the villages, said veterinarian Chandra Rana. ‘We have also been taking initiatives to solve the problems of farmers,’ he said, ‘Now, when we go to the farmer’s shed after doing video X-rays, the difference is visible.’ In a period of two days, the problems of 19 animals have been solved by going to the farmer’s shed and doing video X-rays.
In the camp, a team including veterinarian Pradhan from Heifer International, veterinarian Milan Chaudhary from the National Animal Breeding Center Banke, veterinarian Chandra Rana from the Rural Economic Development Association Reda, and head of the Animal Development Branch of Ribdikot Rural Municipality Geeta Nepali, among others, went door-to-door and provided services. Those who reached the houses were mainly treated for infertility problems and animals with reproductive disorders.
To fulfill the resolution of 'The basis for building a prosperous Ribdikot, extensive expansion in agriculture', the municipality has been investing crores annually in agriculture and animal husbandry. The rural municipality has invested 15 million in 2080/81 and 141 million 43 thousand in 2081/82. Heifer has invested 52 million 10 thousand in 2081/81 and 47 million 63 thousand in 2081/82. Heifer had discussed with the village executive as well as the technicians of the ward's animal development branch before conducting the camp.
