Niraj Chaudhary, 28, of Dang Tulsipur Sub-metropolitan City-5, died in a shooting incident at Hamar Tharu Restaurant in Rajapur Municipality-4, Bardiya last Sunday. Chaudhary, who was found unconscious at 8 am, was rushed to Nepalgunj, but he died during treatment.

Police have arrested Mahabir Chaudhary, 51, of Tulsipur Sub-metropolitan City-6, Dang from Kailali on charges of shooting Neeraj, a worker at a poultry farm in Rajapur Municipality-4. The postmortem report of the deceased shows that the Tharu was shot near the ear with a pistol. Bardiya Police Inspector Prakash Singh Karki said that further investigation is underway.

Last Saturday, shots were fired in Lamahi, Dang. 18-year-old Deepak Sunar, a shop assistant, was injured when a gun was fired at Juntara Gold and Silver Shop in Lamahi Street, Lamahi Municipality-5. He has recovered after treatment. Two people have been arrested on charges of shooting and an investigation is underway. The main suspect involved in the incident is absconding.

One person was injured on Saturday when a pistol hidden in a hotel in Lamahi, Dang, exploded. District Police Office spokesperson Chakra Bahadur Shah said that 18-year-old Shisham Gautam, a hotel worker, was injured when a pistol hidden in the Royal Palace Hotel in Rato Danda, Lamahi. According to him, the pistol hidden above the AC exploded while cleaning the room. Gautam's condition is normal.

Similarly, two people were arrested last Friday with a pistol and 2 rounds of bullets from the Durbar Hotel and Restaurant in Pohwachok, Gaidahawa Rural Municipality-3, Rupandehi. The arrested have been identified as Ramzan Khan, 52, of Dihawa, Siddharthnagar Sadarthana Police Station, and Sanjay Pasi, 42, of Marchhawa, Bharat Thana.

The police had recovered 2 pistols, 2 cartridges and 5 bullets from Khan. A few days ago, a pistol with the words 'Made in USA' written on it was found unopened in Banke's Nepalgunj Bus Park. Banke police have said that no untoward incident occurred despite the discovery of the pistol and that a search is underway for the person who kept the pistol.

On Sunday, the police took Hum Bahadur Somai, 69, of Dandadum, Tansen Municipality-9, Palpa, into custody with an illegally loaded gun.  A police team deployed from the temporary police post Madi took Somai into custody with the gun.  Somai was arrested from his home with an illegally loaded gun, said Hom Bahadur Chaudhary, Information Officer at the District Police Office, Palpa.

Last Saturday, the police had taken a person into custody with a semi-automatic pistol from Chandrauta, Kapilvastu.  The person, who was sentenced to prison by the court in a robbery case, was arrested from his home by the police.  These are the incidents of weapons being found in various districts of Lumbini Province and deaths and injuries caused by the use of small arms in the last 15 days.

The incident details provided by the Lumbini Province Police Office, Dang, show that the use of small arms has increased in the Terai districts of Lumbini Province in recent days. The use of illegal small arms and the fear created by it seem to have a social impact and will also affect the upcoming House of Representatives elections. Small arms are also posing a challenge for the elections.

The threat of small arms and prisoners escaping from prisons is also posing a challenge for the election atmosphere. Preliminary police investigations indicate that the weapons found and used recently entered through the open border with India.

Due to the open border, shots were fired during a fight between customers at the four-star Hotel Nirvana in Bhairahawa in the last week of Kartik. The person and the weapon involved in the incident have not been found yet. As a result, even businessmen are insecure and in fear.

The Lumbini Province Police Office has classified Rupandehi, Dang, Banke, Nawalparasi and Kapilvastu districts as highly sensitive districts from a security perspective. Recently, undesirable activities have been increasing in Bardiya and Dang, said Lumbini Province Police Chief Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajendra Prasad Bhatta. ‘We have become serious due to the recent developments in some districts of the Terai,’ he said. ‘Nepal Police, in coordination with other security agencies and the Indian police, are working to find small arms and tighten checks and surveillance at places where weapons enter.’ He said that further investigation is also being carried out against those arrested.

The police have intensified their search for those involved in the incident on suspicion that they were involved in the Gen-G movement and protests on Bhadra 23 and 24. Nearly 1,700 prisoners had escaped from Lumbini Province. More than 500 of them are still at large.

The open border in Lumbini Province is the main challenge to creating an environment for social security and elections, said Sharda Prasad Chaudhary, Information Officer and Senior Superintendent of Police at the Lumbini Province Police Office. ‘It seems that small arms are being used in theft, robbery and criminal activities,’ he said. ‘After such incidents increased in the Terai districts, we have now prepared a security strategy accordingly and increased search and surveillance.’ He said that the search for absconding criminals has also been intensified. Chaudhary said that the police have so far recovered 26 weapons of various sizes. 6 of them are pistols.
