Tiger census from December 20

A tiger census will be conducted in Bardiya National Park from December 20 this year. The park has stated that necessary preparations are underway for the tiger census.

Adequate arrangements for cameras for tiger census have not yet been made. Ajit Tumphahamphe, head of the National Trust for Nature Conservation, Bardiya, said that about 450 cameras are required in and around Bardiya National Park.

145 cameras have arrived from Kathmandu. He said that other cameras will come from Kathmandu and there are cameras in stock for tiger census in the past. The census is being conducted using camera trapping technology.

The National Parks Department has stated that the tiger census will be held in Chitwan-Parsa, Banke, Bardiya and Shukla National Parks and Laljhari Complex. Tiger census is conducted in the park every four years.

A joint technical team from the National Parks Wildlife Department, the World Wildlife Fund and the National Trust for Nature Conservation will conduct the census with the help of camera trapping. It has been stated that tiger census will be conducted in Khata Biological Marg and surrounding areas besides Bardiya National Park.

The technical team deployed for the tiger census will be trained from the last week of Mangsir. The tiger census is scheduled to be held by 21. More than 100 people from the park, the World Wildlife Fund, the Nature Conservation Fund, and other skilled technical teams and staff will be deployed for the tiger census.

Five blocks, one in Dang, two in Banke, and two in Bardiya, will be created for the census. Sarojmani Poudel, Senior Assistant Conservation Officer of the park, said that 49 staff, including three tamed elephants and the Nepali Army, will be deployed for the tiger census.

The first tiger census was conducted in 2018. At that time, the number of tigers in Bardiya had reached 87. When the census was conducted in 2013, there were 50 tigers in Bardiya Park. When the tiger census was conducted four years ago, the number of tigers in Bardiya had reached 125. The park staff estimates that the number of tigers will increase this year.
