Out of 600 people examined at an eye camp in Marchwar, a rural area of Rupandehi, 280 were confirmed to have cataracts.
Half of the people who underwent a free eye examination camp organized by the Rotary Club of Central Lumbini in Kotahimai Rural Municipality-5 on Saturday were found to have cataracts.
The camp was organized targeting the residents of the areas affected by cataracts, said club president Bishnu Sharma. According to him, locals came from villages to get their eyes checked at the camp. Most of the citizens of Marchwar above 45 years of age have cataracts. Free medicines have also been distributed to patients with eye problems at the camp.
Patients with cataracts will undergo free surgery at Lumbini Netralaya in Bhairahawa from next week. Rotary has set a target of performing free surgery on 250 cataract patients this year. Accordingly, Sharma said that the camp was conducted in remote settlements.
Since cataracts were found in more people in the camp conducted at one place, the club has requested other organizations to help in the surgery. Chairman Sharma said that as part of social responsibility, the club will perform cataract surgery on most of the eyes. Lumbini Netralaya operator Dr. Hira Shah said that cataract problems are seen in aging men, women and the elderly. ‘The condition of cataracts has been seen here,’ he said, ‘Due to lack of awareness and financial constraints, the problem of not going to the hospital or not getting tested has increased.’
