Parmananda Bhandari of Resunga Municipality-8 is worried about the disappearance of the road mirror in front of his house. Although road mirrors were installed to reduce accidents due to the winding roads, he said that the risk of accidents has increased due to the absence of such mirrors. “The approaching vehicles used to be visible in the mirror and would come slowly,” he said. “Now there is no mirror, they come close and brake indiscriminately.”
Scooter driver Rupa Khatri, who uses this road a lot, complains that she feels scared after the broken mirrors. ‘The mirrors placed on this road made it very easy,’ she said. ‘Building a structure but not protecting it is a problem.’ She says that no one wants to protect it.
Dil Bahadur Khatri of Resunga Municipality-13 complains that after breaking the mirrors, there is only a pole to put the mirrors on. ‘Who breaks them and who takes them away? Who cares about the house!’ he said. ‘To reduce accidents, we need to put mirrors again.’ He said that if there are mirrors on the scooters, vehicles will move safely.
Not only this, more than a hundred vehicles, both small and large, ply this section daily. Hundreds of passengers travel on it. A dual carriageway is rarely found on this section. Where the risk of accidents is also the same. Even though there are no major accidents, vehicles collide and minor damage still occur.
The Gaundakot-Tamghas section of Gulmi along the Madan Bhandari Highway is narrow and difficult to navigate. Although road mirrors were installed on the side of the road to reduce accidents, they are no longer visible.
The Road Division Office, Palpa, had installed road mirrors at 14 locations in the fiscal year 2072/73 with an investment of Rs. 392,000. However, some of those road mirrors disappeared at that time, while others lasted for a year or two, but later became unusable.
Although this road section is now the Madan Bhandari Highway, the Road Division Office, Palpa is maintaining it until it is handed over. As the road is getting wider, there is no program to install road mirrors. However, although the road is wide from Ridi to Birbas, there is no decision on the section from Gaundakot to Tamghas.
Senior Division Engineer Ramesh Chaudhary, Chief of Madan Bhandari Highway Planning Office, Gulmi, said that the Gaundakot-Tamghas section is not under this office as there is no contract. He also said that they do not have any program on this road at the moment.
Information Officer Engineer Durga Gautam of Road Division Office, Palpa said that although there were no road mirrors earlier, there is no program to install road mirrors now. He said that the road will gradually be contracted and will go under the Madan Bhandari Highway and that there will be no need to install road mirrors once the road is wide.
Chief District Officer in Gulmi, Badrinath Gairhe, said that since it is very good to have road mirrors on narrow roads to reduce accidents, he will discuss with both offices and take the initiative. He also said that there will be coordination on his part.
