A UML district leader has died in a motorcycle accident in Rolpa. Police said that UML district member Amrita Gharti, a resident of Madi Rural Municipality-6, Korchabang, died on Wednesday afternoon.
Gharti, 47, who is also a former teacher, was on her way to her home from the local Minahi Bazaar on a motorcycle driven by a relative. After the motorcycle accident near Minahi, leader Gharti fell about 200 meters below the road. She died on the spot, according to police. The motorcycle accident occurred along the Martyrs' Marg.
Amrita was returning from a wedding party in Punthok village when the accident occurred, said UML Lumbini Province member Prem Bahadur Gharti. The driver, who was slightly injured after the accident, was taken into custody by police, while the body was cremated in her village Korchabang on Thursday after a postmortem at the District Hospital Rolpa.
UML District President Amrita Bahadur Budha issued a statement saying that Amrita's death has caused irreparable loss to the party.
Amrita was active in political activities after taking leave from teaching.
