An Indian national arrested on charges of trafficking illegal drugs has committed suicide in the toilet of a police detention cell.
Binod Kumar Nishad, 39, of Dunetha Daman in Siddharthnagar district, India, who had been in custody for 19 days, committed suicide in the custody cell of the District Police Office in Taulihawa, the district headquarters, last night.
Nishad, who had gone to the toilet at around 1 am last night, did not return for a long time and the person he slept with informed the police. When the police arrived, they found him hanging. The police, however, have not brought the incident to light. They have kept the incident a secret, saying it would cause unnecessary trouble and tension.
District Police Spokesperson DSP Ripendra Kumar Singh said that the incident had taken place and that further investigation was underway. He was arrested on Kartik 14 at around 8 pm while returning from India with 79.64 grams of illegal drugs, Khero Heroin.
He was arrested by a team from the Area Police Office, Pakdi and the Narcotics Control Bureau Branch Office, Bhairahawa while he was riding a Pulsar motorcycle with registration number UP55Y0638. The drugs were recovered during a search of his body. Along with him, 27-year-old Shiva Ratan, a resident of Shohratgarh Madhanapur in Siddharthnagar district, India, was also arrested. A digital scale for weighing drugs was also recovered from Shiva Ratan.
Both the men were taken into custody by the police and were being investigated by extending their remands by the court.
