Road Board Nepal has started collecting road usage fees through digital means on the Bhairahawa-Bhumahi section of Rupandehi.

The toll collection started on Monday at the structure built near the Rohini Bridge under the road section.

For the first time since the Corona pandemic, the board has deployed employees to collect tolls on the 28-kilometer Bhairahawa-Bhumahi section. Ganesh Bahadur KC, Executive Director of Road Board Nepal, informed that the collection of tolls for road use has been started for the first time by deploying employees as per the Road Board Act 2058 BS.

Earlier, although the structure was ready for collection in that section, the amount was not collected. There was a traffic jam as toll collection started through digital medium on Monday. Many drivers had questions after having to pay the amount for the first time.

Executive Director KC had started the payment of road use tolls through digital medium on Monday noon on the occasion of Tax Day. In partnership with NIC Asia Bank, arrangements have been made to pay the toll amount through QR code.

Earlier, there was a dispute when collecting such fees through contractors, so this time arrangements have been made through the board and outsourced employees. ‘We were also tense when the contractor did not collect the amount that should have been collected,’ he said, ‘As per the decision of the Council of Ministers on 17 Jestha 2081, we have started collecting toll tax through digital means.’

He said that the place where the fees are currently collected is close to the Bhairahawa customs point and toll collection has been started from here to control excess load. ‘This money is spent on road maintenance from where the fees are collected,’ he said, ‘The reason for starting the collection from here is to check why vehicles enter through customs with overload.’

He said that the road collapses due to overload. Since it is a road built with the help of the Asian Development Bank, a notice about collecting fees from here has already been published in the gazette in 2076 BS.

According to which, the toll fee has been fixed at Rs 30 for buses, minibuses, trucks, minitrucks and heavy machinery equipment, Rs 20 for cars, jeeps, vans, pickups and tractors and Rs 10 for three-wheelers.

He informed that collection will also start in the Birgunj-Pathlaiya, Dharan-Biratnagar and Narayangadh-Muglin sections soon after this. The amount collected on these roads will be deposited directly in the Road Board Nepal. In addition, the information on the toll collected on the roads has been made computer-regularizable. ‘It is an attempt to keep the roads alive by taking a small amount from the vehicles plying on the road,’ he said, ‘Now we will modernize the collection.’
