Technology makes it easier to import rice

What you should know

The labor-intensive task of importing rice has been made easier in recent times by technology. It used to be difficult to import rice in fields where large amounts of rice are grown.

In the main fields of Gulmi, the use of threshers has made it very easy to bring in rice. Bimal Panthi, who is cultivating rice in the Jablung field of ISMA Rural Municipality-6 Ammarpur, easily brought in 80 bushels of rice produced in an area of 20 ropanis in an hour. ‘It used to take 20/25 workers to work all day to thresh this rice,’ he said, ‘now it has become very easy, rice can be threshed in an hour with a thresher.’ He said that the old style of planting and harvesting rice is still being followed.

Krishna Ghimire of ISMA Rural Municipality-6 Ammarpur, who has leased land in Chaurasi field and cultivated rice, said that he has produced 300 bushels of rice in an area of 80 ropanis.  Although manpower is required to plant, harrow and harvest rice, the use of modern technology has made it very easy to plow the field and thresh rice. "I was already involved in commercial farming," he said, "gradually technology has made it easier, technology is also necessary for planting and harvesting rice."

Mainly, Ramdhan, Khumal, Hansraj, Makwanpur, Hardinath, Jadan, Aanp Jhote and Lame varieties of rice are being cultivated. According to the Agricultural Knowledge Center, rice is being grown mainly in the areas of Arbeni, Kanauta,  Chapchaur, Limgha, Aslewa, Khaireni, Sahaghat, Chehmi, Tallaphant, Indregaunda, Bhuwachidi, Bamitaksar, Simaltari, Sirseni of Madane, Aglungfendi, Panaha Khola and Chaldi, Chaurasi Phat of ISMA, Hulake, Chaldikhola, Nisti, Garamtari, Kharjang, Tarifant and Ghodahaphant, Agaha and Ghiumbensi in the district.

The Agricultural Knowledge Center estimates that more than 2,200 metric tons of rice have been damaged in fields across the district due to adverse weather this year. This year, 24,000 metric tons of rice is expected to be produced in an area of 7,048 hectares, said Agriculture Technical Officer Tikaram Neupan, Information Officer of the Agricultural Knowledge Center. He said that work is underway to collect data in this regard by requesting it from the local level.
