Sugarcane farmers in West Nawalparasi have demanded an immediate minimum support price.
Farmers who are preparing to harvest sugarcane in the next few days have demanded that the government fix the minimum support price. This year too, farmers are in trouble after the government did not fix the minimum support price on time. ‘No matter whose government comes, it is not found to be serious about the problems of farmers. Every year, farmers are suffering due to the delay in fixing the price,’ said Jagdish Chaudhary, a farmer from Pratappur. ‘The government had to fix the price immediately by collecting the sweat and investment of the farmers, and also had to increase the subsidy amount.’
Pratappur Rural Municipality Chairman and Lumbini Province Sugarcane Producer Farmers’ Committee Coordinator Umesh Chandra Yadav said that the government should fix the price immediately as farmers have started selling sugarcane in crushers. Yadav said that a price of Rs 800 per quintal should be fixed according to the cost of production.
Sugarcane production in the district is decreasing this year compared to previous years. It is estimated that only about 1 million to 1.2 million quintals of sugarcane will be produced in Nawalparasi this year.
Lumbini, Bagmati and Indira Sugar are operating in the district. Last year, the government had fixed the price at Rs 585 per quintal by the industry and Rs 70 by the government as a subsidy. However, later, the Finance Ministry reduced the subsidy amount, saying there was no source.
